99% of People Are Wrong: How Many Holes Does This Shirt Really Have? At first glance, the question seems almost too easy:

How many holes does this shirt have?

A shirt has an opening for the head, two openings for the arms, and an opening at the bottom.

That makes four.

Simple, right?

Not necessarily.

A viral puzzle built around a damaged shirt has turned this ordinary question into a surprisingly complicated exercise in visual reasoning. Depending on exactly what is visible in the picture—and, more importantly, what you mean by a “hole”—the answer can change.

That is why these puzzles are so effective.

They appear to test arithmetic, but they actually test how carefully you interpret visual information.

The most commonly discussed version shows a shirt with several visible tears or openings in addition to its normal openings. Some of those tears appear to go through both the front and back of the garment, while others may simply be openings in one layer.

So the real question isn’t simply:

“How many holes do you see?”

It is:

“What counts as a hole, and how are the visible openings connected?”

The Traditional Answer: Four Holes

Let’s begin with an ordinary intact shirt.

A conventional T-shirt has four major openings:

1. The neck opening

2. The left sleeve opening

3. The right sleeve opening

4. The bottom opening

So, if someone asks how many holes a normal shirt has, four is the obvious answer.

This is probably why these puzzles fool people.

The brain recognizes the object immediately.

It sees “shirt” and retrieves a familiar mental model.

That mental shortcut works perfectly well in everyday life.

But puzzles are designed to punish shortcuts.

The moment the shirt is damaged, that familiar four-hole model becomes much less reliable.
