The Sentimental Stuff
Printed or Hand-Painted Glassware
You know those measuring cups where the markings slowly disappear?
Repeated dishwasher cycles can wear away some printed markings and decorative designs. Hand-painted pieces can be even more delicate, particularly when their finishes were not designed to withstand repeated high-temperature washing.
If the markings or decoration matter to you, hand washing is the safer choice.
Fine China With Metallic Trim
Gold accents and dishwashers are not always friends.
Dishwasher detergent, heat and strong water jets can wear away or damage metallic decoration such as gold or silver trim.
Even if the rest of the piece survives, the decorative finish may not look the same after repeated washing.
Delicate and older tableware deserves extra caution because replacing it may be impossible—or simply not worth the risk.
Vintage China and Delicate Crystal
Some things aren’t about convenience—they’re about preservation.
Older pieces, particularly items that have already been repaired or have developed tiny imperfections, may be more vulnerable to thermal shock and mechanical stress.
Some crystal can also become cloudy or develop surface damage after repeated dishwasher exposure, depending on its composition and the dishwasher conditions.
You could risk it—but if the piece has sentimental or monetary value, hand washing is usually the more cautious choice.
But the dishwasher risks don’t stop with cookware and heirloom tableware—there are several ordinary items you may use every day that deserve a second look before going into the rack.
And some of the most easily overlooked dishwasher risks are hiding in the items you reach for every morning.
