Ceramic-Coated Cookware
Here’s a weird one—many so-called ceramic pans are not made entirely from ceramic. They commonly use a ceramic-based nonstick coating over another material.
Repeated exposure to harsh detergents, high temperatures and abrasive conditions can contribute to wear of that coating.
Hand washing with a soft sponge can help preserve the surface for longer, particularly when the manufacturer recommends it.
Acrylic and Melamine Dishes
These dishes are popular for a reason: they are lightweight, colorful and resistant to breaking.
However, depending on the specific product and its instructions, dishwasher exposure can contribute to:
- Fading
- Cracking
- Warping
The damage may not happen immediately, which makes it easy to overlook until the change becomes obvious.
And then there are the pieces you probably care about most—not because they’re expensive kitchen tools, but because their markings, decoration or history can’t easily be replaced.
When an item carries memories as well as a decorative finish, a little extra care can prevent an ordinary wash cycle from causing an irreversible change.
