Intense or repeated scratching can break the skin and, in some cases, lead to a secondary skin infection. Pubic lice themselves are not known to transmit disease.
Pubic lice and other conditions
Pubic lice are different from head lice, body lice, fleas, ticks, and mites. They are adapted to grasp coarse body hair and generally do not live on the scalp. Other conditions—including skin irritation, dermatitis, fungal infections, or harmless debris on the hair—can sometimes cause similar symptoms or be mistaken for lice or nits.
