“No,” she says again, firmer this time. “You already gave me my name back. Do not turn gratitude into a transaction.”
You sit across from her.
“It is not charity.”
“I know,” she says. “That is why I can say no.”
You smile despite yourself.

“Then what do you want?”
She looks around the room.
“I want this place to stay open when the headlines stop.”
“It will.”
“I want lawyers who speak Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, and whatever else people bring through that door.”
“You will have them.”
“I want emergency housing for women whose employers throw them out at midnight.”
“Done.”
“And I want one thing for myself.”
“Name it.”
She looks out the window again.
“I want to go back to being ordinary.”

“She is,” you say.
