recognize.
So, Is a Fuzzy Caterpillar Harmless or Dangerous?
The answer is: it depends on the species.
A fuzzy caterpillar isn’t automatically dangerous, and plenty of them are perfectly harmless.
But the puss caterpillar is a great reminder that appearances can be deceiving.
That fluffy coat can make it look like the most pettable little creature in the garden, while hidden defensive spines make touching it a very bad idea.
So if you spot one crawling across a leaf, here’s what I’d do:
Stop. Look. Take a picture. Keep your hands to yourself.
Let it carry on with its very important caterpillar business.
It may eventually become a moth, and you get to enjoy the strange little encounter without learning firsthand what its defenses feel like.
And honestly, that’s the kind of backyard wildlife encounter I prefer—interesting, memorable, and completely hands-off.
