Hobo Dinner Foil Packets

Hobo Dinner Foil Packets

Description

Hobo Dinner Foil Packets are a classic all-in-one meal made by wrapping seasoned meat, vegetables, and optional toppings in aluminum foil and cooking them together. The ingredients steam and roast in their own juices, creating a flavorful, tender dinner with minimal cleanup. They’re popular for camping trips, backyard grilling, and easy weeknight meals because each packet can be customized to individual tastes.

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Optional Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Chopped fresh parsley
  • Crumbled bacon

Equipment

  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil
  • Mixing bowl
  • Grill, campfire, or oven

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or prepare a medium-hot grill.
  2. Slice potatoes, carrots, and onions into thin, even pieces.
  3. In a bowl, combine vegetables with olive oil and half of the seasonings.

Step 2: Prepare the Meat

  1. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions.
  2. Form each portion into a patty.
  3. Season both sides with the remaining spices.

Step 3: Assemble the Packets

  1. Cut four large sheets of heavy-duty foil.
  2. Place a layer of potatoes in the center of each sheet.
  3. Add carrots, onions, and green beans.
  4. Place a beef patty on top.
  5. Fold the foil tightly to seal each packet.

Step 4: Cook

Oven Method

  • Bake for 35–45 minutes, until potatoes are tender and beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Grill Method

  • Cook over medium heat for 30–40 minutes, turning once halfway through.

Campfire Method

  • Place packets on hot coals and cook for 25–35 minutes, turning occasionally.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Carefully open packets (hot steam will escape).
  2. Add cheese if desired and let it melt.
  3. Garnish with parsley and serve.

Recipe Notes

  • Thinly sliced vegetables cook more evenly.
  • Heavy-duty foil helps prevent tearing.
  • The vegetables absorb the meat juices, enhancing flavor.
  • Individual packets make portion control easy.
  • You can prepare packets several hours ahead and refrigerate until cooking.
