But that afternoon, he returned home far too soon. Tears clung to his lashes as he explained that Mr. Dickinson had refused to pay him. There was no contract, he claimed. It was “a lesson.” Ben’s voice shook as he asked why working hard wasn’t enough. I hugged him and told him the truth: he had done nothing wrong.
