My grandfather admitted that he had spent decades ignoring corruption inside his own family. Arthur and Julian had not built their fortune through skill or honest business. They had built it through fraud. For six years, Vance Defense Logistics had falsified safety certificates for medical equipment supplied to military units overseas. The company charged the government for combat-grade surgical kits, trauma supplies, sterile dressings, tourniquets, and anaesthesia equipment. But it shipped cheaper, unreliable substitutes. My grandfather had discovered the evidence two months earlier. When he confronted Arthur, my father threatened to have him declared mentally unfit. The letter ended with an apology. My grandfather wrote that he had allowed Arthur to control the family for too long. He had watched my father drive me away because I was the only person willing to reject his rules. Reed looked at me carefully. “If we proceed, your family’s company will collapse. Your father and brother could spend years in prison.” I placed my grandfather’s lighter beside the folder. “My family name was destroyed the moment they placed profit above a soldier’s life,” I said. The same people my father had tried to impress at Grandfather’s funeral watched as the lead agent announced the arrest warrants. Arthur protested immediately. “This is a mistake. Do you know who I am?” The agent told him to turn around. Julian panicked and attempted to move toward the lawn, but two marshals stopped him. As they were escorted down the driveway, I stepped from a military sedan parked near the gate. My father froze when he saw me. Arthur pleaded guilty to conspiracy and federal fraud and received a fifteen-year sentence. Julian received eight years. One autumn morning, I returned to Arlington National Cemetery.
